Suunto MC-2DLIN Compass

Product Description

The MC range of mirror compasses provides an invaluable tool for those who place a particular premium on accurate and reliable directional measurements; for example surveyors, miners, architects, rescue patrols, hikers, boaters and the military. The declination adjustment system, standard throughout the range, is especially useful when working in areas of large magnetic variation, while the sighting notch provides superior accuracy.

Amazon.com Product Description

Hailing from Suunto's MC range of mirror compasses, the MC-2DLIN is an invaluable tool for people who value highly accurate and reliable directional measurements, such as surveyors, miners, architects, rescue patrols, hikers, boaters, and the military. The MC-2DLIN boasts a fixed declination adjustment system--standard throughout the range--that's especially useful when working in areas with large magnetic variation. The tool's additional sighting hole, meanwhile, ensures superior accuracy, as does the jewel bearing. Add in a mirrored lid, a baseplate with rubber nonslip feet, a clinometer that measures the ground slope, luminous points, and an easy-to-read bezel with self-cleaning bearings and you have a versatile, practical compass for a variety of applications.

The MC-2DLIN employs Suunto's two-zone system to achieve precise, accurate readings regardless of location. Previously, most compasses functioned well in only one of five geographic zones. That's because the compasses were balanced differently based on the zone's inclination, i.e., the vertical intensity and direction of the Earth's magnetic field. However, as people began to travel more, it became clear that globe-hopping adventurers needed compasses with a greater geographical range. Suunto's two-zone system, by contrast, considers only the northern and southern hemispheres. In practice, this means that a Suunto compass designed for the northern hemisphere--as the MC-2DLIN is--will still work for a fair distance into the southern hemisphere and vice-versa. Suunto is one of only two compass manufacturers to offer two-zone compasses.

The MC-2DLIN, which also sports a lanyard for around-the-neck use, measures 2.5 by 0.6 by 3.9 inches (W x H x D) with the lid closed and weighs a mere 2.65 ounces. It's also backed by a lifetime warranty.

  • Compact mirrored compass for taking highly accurate and reliable directional measurements
  • Employs Suunto's two-zone system for reliable readings in northern hemisphere
  • Fixed declination adjustment system is ideal for areas with large magnetic variation
  • Extra sighting hole for added precision; baseplate with rubber nonslip feet; clinometer
  • Measures 2.5 x 0.6 x 3.9 inches (W x H x D) and weighs 2.65 ounces; lifetime warranty

I hate having to do reviews like this, but when a manufacturer earns it, well...

Several weeks ago I ordered the Suunto MC-2DLIN from Amazon (great service as always) for evaluation. I own a number of Suunto compasses and have used them in some pretty harsh environments (Middle East) and I've always been impressed with the quality of the company's products. Suunto is the ONLY brand of compass I've owned where the needle capsule did not develop air bubbles. I can't say the same for some other well known brands, particularly Silva and Brunton.

A relative told me he was interested in buying this compass for his son for use in Boy Scouts and asked my opinion. I told him I'd buy one and check it out.

Overall the compass is a well made example of a classic design and first impressions are very good. However, on close examination of the compass needle capsule it is clear that the alignment arrow in the base of the compass capsule and the parallel... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Item!, November 12, 2010

This Suunto Compass has exceeded my expectations! Whereas the Silva Ranger has been the mainstay of our (non-electronic) search and rescue navigation aids in the past, this compass has all of the same features, lower price, better glow in the dark face and easier to read dial, straight forward declination adjustment, ergonomic curvature below the sighting mirror to better visualize your destination and the magnifying lens on the base-plate is located where is becomes useful when looking at a map... Drawbacks? Cheesy lanyard clasp, UTM Markings do not take the place of a stand alone map interpolator (in other words, equally as useless as the ones on the more expensive ranger).

Look ... its cheaper, just as functional and better looking than the next compass in its class!

5.0 out of 5 stars Accurate compass, easy to read & easy declination adjustment, May 19, 2010

I initially bought a version of this compass without a mirror. It is a good compass, but I decided it would be easier and more accurate to read if I had bought the version (Suunto MC-2DLIN Compass) with the mirror. I like this mirrored version so well that I bought another just like it as a back-up. This compass is easy to get a reading using the mirror. The scales provided on the see-thru base are nice and adjusting for declination is very easy; just flip the compass over and using the supplied tool, make a slight adjustment (East or West, as apprpriate) and then you are true North! I had to adjust for 7 1/2 degrees West declination and it was easy to do.
